Architecture and Art
Modern Architecture
Numerous amounts of architects have made Hilversum a world-renowned sample of modern day architecture. Especially the architect Willem Marinus Dudok has left his distinctive mark on the city with his famous and frequently copied 1931 City Hall as undisputed masterpiece. Another spectacular example of Hilversum's architecture is the Dutch Institute of Sound and Vision in the Media Park, designed by the architects Neutelings and Riedijk. Anyone who loves functionalism (architectural style between 1920-1960) will enjoy the monumental architecture, especially the sanatorium Zonnestraal and the hotel/theatre Gooiland, designed by the architect Duiker. Even Berlage and his Amsterdamse School architecture, MVRDV designs and many other architectural styles can be found all across Hilversum.
Art in public places
Besides the monumental architecture, Hilversum stands out with the many works of art in public places. The largest part of Hilversum's art collection consists of 1960's figurative art works, mostly executed in bronze. Moreover, any observant visitor of Hilversum will see lots of images and art works by designers like Philippe Starck and Alessandro Mendini.
