Waste taxes and Garbage collection
Household waste is the garbage you can throw out in green and grey mini-containers, collective containers (high-rise buildings/flats) or in garbage bags (in the city centre). This household waste will be collected once a week by the municipal garbage collection. (The GAD).
Mini-containers
The GAD offers several different mini-containers: Grey for waste after separation of recyclable elements, green for organic waste and blue for waste paper. By using these containers to their fullest, anyone can make a difference in efficient waste disposal. This not only helps the environment, but it also saves you money; citizens contribute to waste disposal through the waste taxes so it eventually cuts costs.
Do not put out your garbage bags on the street before 22.00 hours at night before the day of the garbage collection, and at the very latest until 07.30 hours on the day of the collection. These restrictions have been set to avoid possible destruction of the bags by cats or birds.
Garbage bags: the rules of the game
Make sure you close the garbage bags properly and that there are no sharp objects inside. This to avoid the bag from ripping or tearing, but most of all it keeps the garbage collectors from possible harm.
Only use the garbage bags that are meant for household waste. No grocery bags or other packing material.
Collective containers for high-rise buildings or flats
The municipal garbage collection (GAD) is responsible for these containers and also takes care of possible repairs. If you store garbage against or near the collective containers during a malfunction, it will be disposed of as soon as possible. If you have any other reason for dumping garbage near or against the containers it is possible that you will receive a fine.
Waste taxes
The collection of waste and its disposal naturally costs the local authorities money. To cover the costs, citizens have to pay waste taxes. The local authorities base these taxes on household numbers. If you do not use your containers it does not automatically mean that you do not have to pay waste taxes. The local authorities assume that every household produces household waste.
